Your Guide to Buying the Right Shed
5 Steps To Find the Perfect Shed for Your Home and Lifestyle
Buying a shed doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With so many options, it helps to break the process into simple steps. At Plants and Things USA, we’ve created this 6-step guide to help you choose a shed that fits your needs, style, and budget—all while ensuring lasting quality.
Step 1
Choose Your Shed Style & Door Placement
There are three classic shed styles:
- A-Frame – Doors can be placed on the gable end (pointed side) or along the long roofline side.
- Quaker – Features a 16″ overhang with doors always on the long side.
- High Wall Barn – Doors can go on either the gable end or the long side.
Each style offers unique cosmetic options, so you can match the look to your home and taste.
Step 2
Decide How Much Space You Need
Think about what you’ll store now—and in the future. Common items include:
- Lawn mowers, tractors, and snow blowers
- Bikes, motorcycles, or ATVs
- Outdoor furniture, camping or fishing gear
- Boats, trailers, or gardening tools
- Workbenches and hobby equipment
Tip: Always plan for more space than you think you’ll need—you’ll be glad you did!
Step 3
Pick Your Siding
Your siding choice impacts both maintenance and appearance. Here are the options:
- DuraTemp T-1-11 – Engineered wood with a plywood backer to prevent moisture damage. Low-maintenance with a long-lasting painted finish.
- Vinyl Siding – Virtually maintenance-free, available in many colors and styles. Installed over plywood for added strength.
- LP Smart Siding – A horizontal wood composite siding, paintable in any color. Installed over plywood for durability.
Step 4
Customize Your Shed
Make your shed your own! Whether you want a workshop, garden cottage, art studio, home office, storage space, or “she shed”, you can design it to suit your lifestyle. Choose from:
- Windows and doors
- Dormers and roofing materials
- Interior finishes
- Architectural accents We’ll help you create the perfect blend of functionality and beauty.
Step 5
Site Prep: Do You Need a Foundation?
The good news—most sheds don’t require complicated foundations. If your yard is level, we can set it directly on the ground (all ground-contact wood is pressure-treated). Blocks can be used for leveling.
For the best results, we recommend a crushed stone base. It provides:
- Even support Excellent drainage
- A cleaner, more finished look
- Protection against critters nesting underneath
Step 6
Delivery & Set-Up
Most sheds arrive fully assembled. Our professional delivery team ensures quick and safe installation—often in about an hour.
We use a specialized shed mover that gently carries your shed across your lawn without damaging the grass. If your site is hard to reach, we also offer on-site assembly for convenience.
